The Zen meditation garden at the Ryoan-Ji, constructed in the 16th century, is made up of groupings of rocks in a bed of raked white gravel. One thought is that it represents an ocean with islands. There are 15 rocks in the garden but at most only 14 can be seen from any given angle! It is said that only through deep meditation can one "see" all 15 rocks with the inner eye.
