The grounds of the Imperial Palace were beautiful, with rivers, ponds and islands. One tradition in Imperial Japan in the summers at the Palace was for court notables, high-ranking samurai and high-born ladies to picnic along this artificial river. They would send notes to each other using toy boats as a form of courting.
