The Shogun was the military dictator of Japan while the Emperor was the god-like "owner" of Japan. While the Shogun's primary castle was in Edo (now Tokyo), he had a castle in the capitol of Kyoto to keep an eye on the Emperor. The had a very uneasy relationship! The Shogun's castle in Kyoto is called Nijo-Jo (Nijo Castle). Here we see a guard tower at a corner of the castle wall.
