Like all castles in Japan, the Nijo-jo had an outer moat and an inner one. Between the outer and inner moats, the commerce of the castle was conducted and the lower-ranking attendants to the shogun lived. Within the inner keep resided the shogun (when in residence) and high-ranking samurai. This is a gate across the inner moat to the inner keep.
