This is the moat around the Imperial Palace. You can see the wall and guard tower. This was originally the Shogun's castle in Edo (Tokyo) until the shogunate was disbanded and the Emperor was restored to power in the late 19th century. At that time, the Emperor moved from Kyoto to Edo (Tokyo) and converted the Shogun's castle to the official Imperial Palace. Unfortunately, the Palace grounds were closed to the public on the day we were there.
