From New Orleans we went to Asheville, NC, the home of the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately-owned home in the U.S. The home is over 170,000 square feet (over 4 acres) and the land consists of 125,000 acres (that's 195 square miles)! It was built between 1889 and 1895 by George Vanderbilt and was their private family home until 1930 when they began to open some of it for tours while living in one wing. In 1950, the last family member moved out and the entire estate is now a tourist attraction. And a fantastic one it is, both the home and the grounds!
