Another site we visited in Rotorua was Hell's
Gate, a geothermal area. Similar to the geothermal areas in
California, it is much bigger and much more active. The sign
reads, "WARNING! Persons who throw litter or stones into
the thermal pools may be asked to retrieve them." I bit
of gallows humor since the pools are above boiling point! You
might say that water can't be above boiling, it turns to steam.
But these pools are water plus minerals that, together, can
sustain higher-than-boiling temperatures.
