Many houses were built like this one. That is not some error in construction or damage from some settling. Houses were bulit with a tilted front so that goods and furniture could be hoisted up to the upper floors without banging into the facade. Many such houses were commercial establishments on the ground floor, merchandise storage on the second floor, and owner's home on the third. Storage on the second floor made it more secure from robbery.
