Another sight that was seen with great frequency along the rivers and canals between Amsterdam and Budapest were castles. Basically, at any bend in the river, some local bigwig built a castle to guard the river and collect passage fees. Eventually, people on the boat would shout "ABC" (another bloody castle)! This one is the Marksburg Castle dating back to the 1200's. Named in honor of St. Mark.
